We invite you to join others by placing a candle in the window at 8 pm on September 10th, a day set aside to bring awareness to the worldwide issue of suicide.
According to the WHO (World Health Organization) , “Suicide is a global phenomenon in all regions of the world; in fact … suicide accounted for 1.4% of all deaths worldwide, making it the 15th leading cause of death in 2012.”
And, according to suicidology.org, data from 2014, in the United States, there were over 42 thousand deaths suicides, and suicide was ranked the 10th leading cause of death in the USA
Suicide affect all ages and cuts across socioeconomic barriers, both in the tragedy for those who commit suicide and to their families and friends.
The economic and human cost of suicidal behavior to individuals, families, communities and society makes suicide a serious public health problem around the world (cdc.gov).
Founded in 1960, the IASP (International Association of Suicide Prevention), “is dedicated to:
- preventing suicidal behaviour,
- alleviating its effects, and
- providing a forum for academics, mental health professionals, crisis workers, volunteers and suicide survivors.
